The Kamenoo promontory at the Katsura Villa in Kyoto, Japan, a widely admired suburban palace that has been owned by the Japanese imperial family since 1883. The house and its gardens were commissioned in the mid 17th century by Prince Toshihito Hachijo, a younger brother of Emperor Go-Yozei. Photograph from “Katsura Imperial Villa”, edited by Virginia Ponciroli (Electa, 2004).
